We have made some pretty amazing connections between some of the situations in Orwell's 1984 and the current goings-on of our real world. For your nightly reading, you should have read up through chapter 2 of part 2. For tonight, Wednesday and Thursday night, make sure you finish section 2. Once again, that's ALL OF SECTION 2 - your study guide, then should reflect your reading through all of section 2.
In class tomorrow, you will view the film I Robot and complete the following assignment:
In 1984, the state attempts to control the individual by reducing everyone to nothing more than an individual manifestation of the will of the state, in essence, rendering human beings as disposable machines. In I Robot, humans have created machines that begin to display parallel characteristics of humans, raising the question of just how malleable the definition of what it means to be human is. There are all sorts of fun and surprising connections, like names for example, and functions of technology. Check out similarities and differences. Look at what the stories have in common, as well as how they diverge. This is due upon my return on Friday. *NOTE: You should include the notes you take during the video with your amazing connections paper! This means that you should watch actively, with pen and paper on desk, and technological devices put away... Your paper should be extensive and amazing. Wow me!
