Ok. So we finish-finished The Wife of Bath's story, and some of us were puzzled, some horrified, and some humored. All may be able to say, "I didn't see that coming." The ending of Wife of Bath's tale on first glance seems to reward a villain with a lollipop, rather than stick him with a painful punishment.
However, we discussed the fact that the punishment isn't the focus of the story. The moral of this exemplum isn't virtue...it's something quite different, one that is defined by the needs of this nuptially-minded story teller.
This focus brought up our second short answer prompt:

Reread the ending of the Wife of Bath’s story. Does this ending surprise you? Remember that it’s her story, so she gets control over its ending. But why did she do it? What are some of the reasons she may have ended the story with this resolution? Use what you know about her to defend your answer.
